During the construction of some buildings between the Plazas del Árbol, Centenar de la Ploma and Calle Baja, the blow of a pickaxe unearthed an unprecedented find: a medieval cellar that had waited no less than eight centuries to be discovered. A true time capsule whose sensational state of preservation facilitated its immediate consideration as a heritage asset of the first order. 

This archaeological discovery has brought back to life one of the most significant periods in the history of Valencia, the one in which James I "the Conqueror" took the city from the Arabs to later annex it to the flourishing Crown of Aragon in 1238.

The Medieval Celler was one of the first buildings to house the Barrio del Carmen. Within its walls, and for more than 200 years, the quintessence of the Mediterranean diet as we know it today was stored, produced and sold: cereal, oil and wine (cereal, olive tree and vine). 

The winery remained in business until well into the 15th century. From then on it could have been a shop or a tavern - one of the many mysteries still enclosed within its walls. What is certain is that today it is one of the most emblematic places in the city of Turia.
