Comfortable excursion from Madrid to the Escorial by bus and accompanying guide to visit El Escorial and its imposing Royal Monastery declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, as well as the monumental complex of the Valley of the Fallen located a few kilometres away, in another beautiful enclave in the Madrid mountains. After approximately one hour of travel enjoying the landscape that gives us the Sierra de Madrid, we begin the tour to El Escorial with the guided visit to the Royal Monastery of the Escorial that Felipe II ordered built as Residence and Royal Pantheon. Symbol of the greatness of the Spanish Empire, the palace-monacal complex is an impressive construction of great historical-artistic and architectural value that houses jewels such as the Basilica, the Pantheon with the tombs of almost all the Kings of Spain since Emperor Charles V, the Royal Library or the palatial dependencies that occupied the different reigning dynasties. After the guided visit to El Escorial we will have time for lunch before continuing our route towards the nearby Cuelgamuros Valley where the highest Christian cross in the world (150 metres) announces the location of the Valley of the Fallen, an extraordinary and controversial work of architecture, sculpture and engineering erected in honour of those who fell in the Civil War that gave way to a long period of dictatorship in Spain. We visit the interior of the basilica carved into the rock and admire the grandeur of the monumental complex and the natural setting that houses it, a protected natural space of great ecological value and unique scenic beauty.
