MAD FOREST

by Caryl Churchill

Directed by Sílvia Navarro Perramon

About Mad Forest

Caryl Churchill’s Mad Forest explores the aftermath of the 1989 Romanian Revolution and the fall of Nicolae Ceaușescu. The play presents a fragmented and sometimes surreal portrayal of life under dictatorship and the challenges of achieving real social and political change.

In 1990, Churchill travelled to Bucharest with students from the Central School of Speech and Drama shortly after Ceaușescu’s regime had collapsed. During the visit, Romanian students and local people shared their experiences of living under the dictatorship and of the revolution itself, which inspired Churchill’s writing.

The play centres on the responses of ordinary people to the dramatic events of December 1989, particularly through the lives of two families: the Vladus and the Antonescus. Part I follows Lucia Vladu’s engagement and marriage to an American, which attracts the attention of the Securitate, Romania’s secret police. Part II consists of testimonies from various Romanian citizens describing their experiences during the revolution. Part III combines surreal elements, including a conversation between a vampire and a dog, with scenes involving characters from Part I, now recovering in hospital and reflecting on the meaning and consequences of the revolution.
