Visit of Gran Teatro La Fenice, with audio guide. The Opera House La Fenice in Venice, it’s one of the most famous and renowned landmarks in the history of Italian theatre, and in the history of opera. Especially in the 19th century, La Fenice became the site of many famous operatic premieres at which the works of several of the four major composers like Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi were performed.
La Fenice was founded in 1792 in Neoclassical style following to a competitive public exam won by one of Canova’s friend, Giannantonio Selva and at that time it was one of the many private theatres for opera performance.
Its name “La Fenice” reflects its role in permitting an opera company to "rise from the ashes" despite losing the use of three theatres to fire. The third and last fire destroyed the house in 1996 leaving only the exterior walls, but it was rebuilt and re-opened in November 2004.
The theatre La Fenice has a seating capacity for over one thousand people and boasts excellent acoustics, a 98-member orchestra and 66-person opera chorus, a dedicated local audience and a large international following.
The theatre is a leading creative venue, staging more than one hundred opera performance per year, a major symphonic season conducted by prominent conductors from across the world, the full cycle of symphonies by Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms and Mahler, a contemporary repertoire focused especially on Venetian artist such as Luigi Nono and Maderna, ballets and chamber music concerts.
