Our route starts at Pico de la Cruz (2351 metres), running over the mountains to Roque de Los Muchachos. Prepare yourself for the breathtaking sight of cliffs plunging down to the floor of the Caldera de Taburiente 1000m below. The rim of the Caldera measures 27km and it has a diameter of 10km. The views from here are truly spectacular – you can see every last corner of the island as well as the silhouettes of the neighbouring islands of Tenerife, El Hierro and La Gomera floating on the horizon.

From here we'll follow the path as it gently winds up and down the mountain peaks until we reach the Mirador de Los Andenes. From here you'll be able to look down on both sides of the island with tiny villages clinging to the clifftops and the waves breaking on the seashore far below. The whole of the North of the island is covered in a mantle of green vegetation, the unique temperate cloud forest, also known as laurisilva.

Slightly further one we'll come across another natural wonder, La Pared de Roberto, a seemingly man-made wall created as a result of the cooling of a mass of volcanic magma. The area is known for its numerous legends and the weird forms of the eroded rock will let your imagination run wild.

From here it's only short stroll to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, one of the most extensive astronomical facilities in the Northern Hemisphere where you can see a series of metal domes housing astronomical instruments belonging to different European countries. The last stretch of our walk takes us to the highest point on the island: Roque de Los Muchachos. We are now 2,426 metres above sea level, with a bird’s eye view of the whole island.
