Discover the secret heart of Mallorca with a train and tram ride through the stunning Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. Sit back and enjoy the views as this historic electric train takes a route north from the capital across the plains before slowly climbing through impressive landscapes, fragrant pine forests and 13 tunnels of the Serra de Tramuntana.
Work began on the railway in 1911 on the profits of the orange and lemon trade, which at the time was booming, and the train still uses its original rolling stock and fittings, meticulously finished and lovingly maintained using traditional methods that evoke the Belle Époque.
There are two destinations: Soller, which is reached by train, and Port de Soller, which is reached from Soller by tram. Walk around its beautifully kept streets with sombre stone houses revealing verdant patios. All seem to lead to the elegant main plaza, which is dominated by a dramatic neo-Gothic church. Enjoy having a coffee and pastry or try some freshly squeezed orange juice as you watch the world go by at one of the many café terraces on the square. The railway station also contains a small museum where you can see works by Picasso and Miró.
Continue your adventure by tram down to the port, cutting through gardens and going down back lanes. Port de Soller has a gorgeous crescent-shaped beach, a picturesque fishing harbour, two lighthouses and many waterfront restaurants and cafés.
